I am so passionate about this company- this cause- this mission- this beauty.
Can a simple piece of fabric help change a village? We believe it can help.
It's simple. Women around the world are responsible for their families, including gathering food, firewood, and water. Sometimes, this means neglecting the care of their babies due to the greater needs of their husbands and older children, especially when there is no extra fabric available to craft a baby carrier. Our mission is to improve the lives of mothers and young children by offering a practical solution: a simple fabric ring sling.

Through our collaboration with Project Baby Bilum, the Umi Sling will be a catalyst for change in these women's lives, improving the health of their babies by providing access to their mothers and to the life-giving breast milk that they need to survive.
Umi Sling is a social enterprise dedicated to bettering mothers' lives. Our first target is the women of rural Papua New Guinea, and hope to expand beyond to other areas in need.
Wear babies, change lives. This is babywearing with a purpose.
About the Umi Sling:
In the same month that I was contemplating opening this shop, my friend Adriel Booker wrote about her trip to Papua New Guinea and the moving story of Komi and her malnourished baby, Umi. Komi was responsible for gathering food for her whole family, and so left Umi back in the village and only fed her 2-3 times per day. Adriel said she was the size of a preemie. They told Komi that newborns need to eat constantly, and why didn't she take the baby with her while she gathered, using the traditional Bilum?
The answer was simple: there was no extra fabric. They literally had just the shirts on their backs. Adriel sent out a call to action to her readers: would we donate ring slings, so on her next visit to PNG, she could deliver them to the women?
Reading Komi and Umi's story struck me. I was all at once brokenhearted and thankful. If need be, I could make a baby carrier out of my curtains or bed sheets, but Komi had no such luxury.
Enter the Umi Sling: a well-made, durable, single-layer ring sling at an affordable price with the highest quality fabrics. When customers purchase an Umi Sling, I sew another one and they are all sent to Adriel, to be given to the women in Bamio.
Adriel writes, "Athough leaving a supply of baby slings will not “solve” the problems in Bamio, it’s a practical, achievable part of the approach we can take in educating and equipping these dear women (and their husbands) in regards to the importance of maternal availability during the newborn and infant stages."
It's a small thing, but it will make a big difference.
It's babywearing, with a purpose.

About Me: The day of my husband's MAT graduation ceremony, I sewed my first ring sling. It quickly became indispensable - I had found an easy way to carry my twins! One in a back carry, one in the ring sling.
I received compliments on my sling and started making them for friends, along with other baby items using found and vintage fabrics and linens. Every ring sling I make is one that I would wear - I could easily become a sling hoarder - so when you purchase one of mine, you know I ship it to your home lovingly, and run my hands over the fabric a few times to say my own Farewell.
Please come say hello at my blog, The Boho Mama!
Today, one of you have the chance to win a ring sling of your own!
If you know me, you know ring slings are my favorite carriers due to their ease and simplicity.
I have a few, and wear at least two of them at different points during the day.
Every single day.
